Globally, the 1960s were a boom decade but also a high Cold War period. Hong Kong’s export-oriented manufacturing thrived on Western demand, lifting many from poverty. n China, the Cultural Revolution from 1966 created turmoil and a new refugee wave, while leftist ideas spilled into Hong Kong, contributing to the 1967 riots and raising fears about political stability. Britain and Europe were still prosperous, offering attractive destinations but immigration from Hong Kong remained limited and elite-focused. Most Hong Kong people concentrated on seizing new factory and trading opportunities at home rather than emigrating.
